A deeply moving story that serves as a reminder that we can redefine what family means to us.

Olivia Clearwater has always felt like an outsider. Estranged from her family for two decades, she's built a successful life in Canada with her husband Jack. She has a loving marriage, her dream house, and a fulfilling career, but something is missing. Despite having put five thousand miles and twenty years between herself and her past, the trauma she went through when she was younger still has a hold on her.

The McNellys have been running the popular pub The Swan for generations and seem to be a close-knit family. What almost nobody knows is that this is an illusion: there's no love lost between the family members. But appearances mean everything to the McNelly's, and eighteen-year-old Agnes must keep the secret or risk her family's wrath. On the outside it looks as if she fits right in, but on the inside she's desperately lonely. Fitting in isn't the same as belonging, and Agnes feels like she doesn't belong anywhere.

When a family member dies, Olivia and her niece Agnes meet for the first time. Agnes grew up being unfavourably compared to her aunt, but Olivia is barely aware of her niece's existence. Getting to know her is like looking into a mirror and seeing her eighteen-year-old self again. It forces her to confront a past she's run away from, and to help her niece avoid making the same mistakes she's made.

In the process they find themselves, the trust they both lost, and most importantly: true belonging.
